Building a world, one character at a time.

Gertrude

  1. This is a character that Fenway Jones is rolling for randomly.
  2. What is this character’s name? - Gertrude.
  3. What is their ancestry (i.e. human, elf, dwarf, halfling, etc)? - High Elf.
  4. What is your job or role (i.e. farmer, hierling/mercenary, shopowner, bandit, etc)? - Gertrude serves as the personal scribe for the boisterous and dramatic Bard, Sir Arnold of Metz. While her family is proud of her "cushy" job transcribing Arnold's exploits, Gertrude finds herself with a serious case of cabin fever, yearning to experience the action herself.
  5. How old are you? - Young Adult (by High Elf standards, she is just entering the age where she is expected to be a proper member of society).
  6. Describe your physical appearance. - Gertrude carries herself with the proud, modest air of an old Elven lineage. She has long blonde hair, always pulled back so you can see her ears, and dresses in practical, modest clothing that is "adventure-ready" just in case she gets the chance to leave the library. She is never without her scribe tools and a pouch of calligraphy supplies.
  7. Describe yourself with 3 adjectives. - Outgoing, Optimistic, and Down-to-Earth.
  8. What is a valuable item/piece of lore/secret that this character possesses? Or do they value an ideal/concept or particular person (i.e. family member, guild member, honor, justice, love etc.) - An Ideal—"If you’re not first, you’re last." Gertrude has a secret, competitive fire; she believes in winning at all costs, which fuels her desire to leave the archives and prove herself in the field.
  9. What is a particular quest you would be willing to recruit or hire the player characters to go do? - Finding the lost petting zoo handler. While transcribing Sir Arnold's latest tale about a trip to an exotic theme park on a remote island (a "Jurassic Park" style enclosure for fearsome beasts), Gertrude noticed a glaring plot hole: Arnold mentioned a handler entering a T-Rex pen with a goat, but never mentioned him leaving. She recruits the party to travel to this "Burrow-Basic Park" to find the missing employee.
  10. What would be their reward for succeeding? - Gertrude offers a sum of gold, but more importantly, she uses her influence to grant the players a "guest spot" on a future adventure with the famous Sir Arnold of Metz. This quest also serves as Gertrude's personal "buy-in" to finally join an adventuring party herself.
  11. What would be the consequence of failure or refusing the call? - If the call is refused, the handler remains lost and is never found, likely meeting a grim end as T-Rex fodder while the party misses out on a high-profile connection. If the players attempt the rescue but fail, Gertrude’s hope of ever becoming an adventurer is crushed, and her frustration becomes so overwhelming that she eventually abandons her duties to Sir Arnold, leaving the famous Bard without his best scribe and potentially disappearing into the wilds herself.

Optional Questions - not required

  • What are the goals and motivations of your character? - *She is motivated by "FOMO" (Fear Of Missing Out). She wants to stop writing about other people's lives and start living her own "win at all costs" narrative. *
  • How do these affect your general personality? - Her outgoing and optimistic nature masks a deep restlessness. She is highly detail-oriented, which is why she noticed the missing handler in the first place.
  • How do you normally interact with your family/friends/peers? With your enemies/rivals? With people who work for you/report to you? With player characters? - She is the "straight man" to Sir Arnold’s eccentricities, often pressing him for the realistic details he overlooks in favor of drama. With player characters, she is helpful and eager, treating them like the heroes she wants to be.
  • Do you have a particular accent or language? Any idiosyncrasies in how you act and speak? - Despite her proud High Elf heritage, she is very down-to-earth. She has a sharp eye for detail and a habit of scribbling in her notebook even during casual conversations.
  • What impact have you made on the world? How have you shaped the local area? - As Sir Arnold's personal scribe, she is entirely responsible for the "official" records of his exploits, shaping how the public, royalty, and future generations perceive one of the land's most famous Bards.
  • Do you have any current problems that prevent you from being a bigger player on the stage? - Her protective family has tightly hemmed her into a comfortable, safe career as a scribe. They insist she stay in this low-risk role until her employment contract is fulfilled, effectively anchoring her to the library floor and barring her from seeking the real-world combat and field adventure she desperately craves.
