Building a world, one character at a time.

Jermaine

  1. This is a character that Jonathan Blevins is rolling for randomly.
  2. What is this character’s name? - Jermaine.
  3. What is their ancestry (i.e. human, elf, dwarf, halfling, etc)? - Troglodyte. While often viewed as barbaric, Jermaine is a highly intelligent reptilian humanoid who stands about six feet tall and weighs roughly 220 pounds.
  4. What is your job or role (i.e. farmer, hierling/mercenary, shopowner, bandit, etc)? - Cartographer. Jermaine is an expert mapmaker who utilizes the natural environment of his Underdark cave dwelling to scribe his works. Instead of using parchment, he carves and paints incredibly detailed, colorful maps of the entire world directly onto the cave walls.
  5. How old are you? - Elder. Jermaine has seen generations of war and devastation, which has led him to seek a more peaceful, reclusive life dedicated to his craft.
  6. Describe your physical appearance. - Jermaine looks like a massive green lizard with a long, thin "Mr. Miyagi" style beard that signals his wisdom. He has a bit of a "dad bod" and wears a pair of sunglasses to protect his sensitive eyes from the light—though one lens is notably broken. He carries a wooden cane for walking and possesses a second, golden cane used for defense.
  7. Describe yourself with 3 adjectives. - Bold, Hilarious, and Wholesome.
  8. What is a valuable item/piece of lore/secret that this character possesses? Or do they value an ideal/concept or particular person (i.e. family member, guild member, honor, justice, love etc.) - Lore—Jermaine has a deep understanding of the gods and their domains. While he is not religious himself due to being "burned" by the gods' greed in the past, he is often courted by them for his geographical expertise. He was taught to read and write by his grandfather, one of the few troglodytes of his era to possess such skills.
  9. What is a particular quest you would be willing to recruit or hire the player characters to go do? - Gap the Map. Jermaine has mapped almost the entire world except for the island where the Sun God resides. Because he refuses to travel into the blinding heat and does not know how to swim, he needs the players to travel south to the island and return with a detailed chart so he can complete the final blank wall in his cave.
  10. What would be their reward for succeeding? - Jermaine offers his prized golden cane. This magical artifact provides confidence to whoever holds it and functions similarly to a "lightsaber" in combat, emanating a powerful, mysterious light that Jermaine himself doesn't fully understand.
  11. What would be the consequence of failure or refusing the call? - If the players accept the quest but return with a false chart or fail to provide the details of the Sun God's island, Jermaine drops his wholesome persona entirely and uses his tactical combat prowess to permanently crush the players' kneecaps, forcing them to walk with wooden canes of their own for the rest of their days.

Optional Questions - not required

  • What are the goals and motivations of your character? - Jermaine is motivated by his life's mission: to be the first troglodyte to map the entire world. He wants to finish his work on the cave walls so that future generations can learn the true layout of the land.
  • How do these affect your general personality? - Because he is the greatest mapmaker alive, he is incredibly bold and doesn't care if he insults people or tells them they "stink." However, he is wholesome enough to deliver these insults in a relatable way that makes people laugh rather than take offense.
  • How do you normally interact with your family/friends/peers? With your enemies/rivals? With people who work for you/report to you? With player characters? - He is wary but willing to talk to Chat (or adventurers). He prefers to stay in the shadows of his cave and is generally suspicious of those who bring bright lights near his eyes. He is familiar with the custom of handshakes but finds them awkward, preferring a complex "fist bump" routine instead.
  • Do you have a particular accent or language? Any idiosyncrasies in how you act and speak? - He speaks Common with a strained, raspy hiss, often pausing to rub his temples in agony.
  • What impact have you made on the world? How have you shaped the local area? - Jermaine has completely mapped the subterranean and surface geography of the known world directly onto his cave walls. He has created a priceless, definitive cartographic vault that foreign gods and planar entities actively covet and seek out for strategic territorial expansion.
  • Do you have any current problems that prevent you from being a bigger player on the stage? - His failing eyesight and severe claw cramps are actively slowing down his map production. Because he refuses to leave the comfortable darkness of his cave, cannot swim, and is terrified of the blinding heat of the surface world, he is entirely dependent on outside travelers to bring him the geographical data he needs to finish his life's work.
