- This is a character that Beth May is rolling for randomly.
- What is this character’s name? - Benny.
- What is their ancestry (i.e. human, elf, dwarf, halfling, etc)? - Meazel. Meazels are typically murderous, reclusive creatures, and Benny fits the physical mold of a hairy, gremlin-like humanoid, though his long life has taken him down a slightly more domestic path.
- What is your job or role (i.e. farmer, hierling/mercenary, shopowner, bandit, etc)? - Watchman. Benny works as the Watchman for an Underdark city's donut shop. He is responsible for enforcing a strict "donut curfew" where no one is allowed to eat donuts after noon, as the shop's supply is limited and afternoon consumption is known to induce violence in the citizens.
- How old are you? - Ancient. Benny is a very old meazel who is "too old for this crap." His age shows in his balding head, which he carefully hides under a cabby hat.
- Describe your physical appearance. - Benny is a hairy, Gollum-esque creature with a noticeable bald patch on top of his head covered by his signature cabby hat. He has a raspy, gravelly voice—the result of years of smoking—and speaks with a thick New York accent.
- Describe yourself with 3 adjectives. - Problematic, Old, and Frugal.
- What is a valuable item/piece of lore/secret that this character possesses? Or do they value an ideal/concept or particular person (i.e. family member, guild member, honor, justice, love etc.) - Ideal—"Always be the best diamond you can be." Despite his surly exterior, Benny believes that people are like diamonds: created by a harsh process of being compacted by life's struggles until they become something unique and hard.
- What is a particular quest you would be willing to recruit or hire the player characters to go do? - The Butthole Ingredient. The donut shop has run out of its secret, essential ingredient: the donut hole. This is actually a deadly, toothy plant that looks like a "butthole" and grows in a dangerous field about half a day's journey north up on the surface. Benny needs the players to harvest ten of these plants to keep the town from descending into donut-deprived chaos.
- What would be their reward for succeeding? - Unlimited access to the donut shop, including the rare privilege of being allowed to eat a donut after the noon curfew.
- What would be the consequence of failure or refusing the call? - If the players accept the quest but fail or return with a false ingredient, Benny drops his 'wholesome diamond' philosophy instantly and uses his reclusive combat skills to protect the shop’s integrity, resulting in the players being forcefully barred from the subterranean community.
Optional Questions - not required
- What are the goals and motivations of your character? - Benny wants to retire. He dreams of settling down far away from the stress of the donut shop, ideally in a quiet "marshmallow" (a marsh-side hut) where he can start a family and find love. His immediate goal is simply to survive his grueling guard shifts and avoid corporate reprimands. Internally, he is motivated by a stubborn, unspoken protectiveness over the innocent citizens who would die if the perimeter fell.
- How do these affect your general personality? - His desire for a quiet life makes him incredibly cynical about his current job. He feels that being a Watchman in a donut-crazed city is a young man's game, and he is perpetually "over it." He is a cynical, cantankerous curmudgeon who constantly mutters complaints under his breath about "management" and the "youth of today."
- How do you normally interact with your family/friends/peers? With your enemies/rivals? With people who work for you/report to you? With player characters? - He is universally problematic and doesn't get along with anyone. He tends to be dismissive and insulting, though he shows a glimmer of respect if an adventurer proves they are physically capable of handling the "butthole danger" of the fields. He treats the younger watchmen with harsh, biting criticism, frequently assigning them the worst chores. To player characters, he is completely unimpressed by their flashy gear or heroic titles, treating them like a massive administrative headache unless they quietly hand him a remedy for his back pain.
- Do you have a particular accent or language? Any idiosyncrasies in how you act and speak? - He speaks with a thick, gravelly New York cabby accent—the result of a lifetime of heavy smoking. His primary idiosyncrasies include explicitly groaning about his bad back, rubbing his stiff knees from standing on the cold Underdark stone, and constantly muttering dismissive complaints under his breath about the lazy, idealistic younger watchmen who don't know real hardship.
- What impact have you made on the world? How have you shaped the local area? - As the city’s lone vigilant Watchman, he is the single baseline force preventing the subterranean community from collapsing into total madness. By aggressively enforcing his noon donut curfew, he stops the city's volatile citizens from experiencing the localized outbreaks of senseless violence triggered by afternoon sugar consumption.
- Do you have any current problems that prevent you from being a bigger player on the stage? - His personality is his biggest obstacle. Because he is so problematic and cantankerous, he struggles to form the alliances or find the love he needs to finally leave his post and settle down. His failing health, combined with a total lack of support or proper equipment from the city's leadership, makes it increasingly difficult for him to secure the outer walls against encroaching subterranean monsters.
