Building a world, one character at a time.

Clover

  1. This is a character that Johnny Stanton IV is customizing based off of himself.
  2. What is this character’s name? - Clover.
  3. What is their ancestry (i.e. human, elf, dwarf, halfling, etc)? - Dwarf (Mountain). While he possesses a grandiloquent true Dwarven name known only to his family, everyone in the community calls him Clover.
  4. What is your job or role (i.e. farmer, hierling/mercenary, shopowner, bandit, etc)? - Crystal Merchant. Clover runs a small business called Clover’s Crystals in the Town Square of the mountain city of Theerum. He sells natural geological specimens and runs guided geology/stone-cutting tours into a pristine, beautifully lit cavern hidden behind his gift shop.
  5. How old are you? - Adult. He is right around 270 years old, which puts him firmly in middle age for a dwarf who has transitioned from a youthful mining career to being an entrepreneur.
  6. Describe your physical appearance. - Clover stands out within traditional Dwarven society by dressing quite flamboyantly in bright purples, blues, and greens instead of muted miners' grays. He has a traditional top knot and black hair, but he braids his long beard with vibrant green, blue, and purple ribbons to match his outfits.
  7. Describe yourself with 3 adjectives. - Different, Colorful, and Easygoing.
  8. What is a valuable item/piece of lore/secret that this character possesses? Or do they value an ideal/concept or particular person (i.e. family member, guild member, honor, justice, love etc.) - Item—The Gold-Core Amethyst. Clover possesses a flawless, clear amethyst crystal that uniquely contains a solid gold nugget suspended inside its facets. He keeps it carefully hidden from other dwarves who would eagerly smash the rare crystal configuration just to extract the raw gold currency.
  9. What is a particular quest you would be willing to recruit or hire the player characters to go do? - Clearing the Crystal Cavern. Clover needs the party to clear out a newly discovered, mineral-rich cavern that has been overrun by a pack of wild Xorn. Because Xorn view precious gems strictly as food, they are actively eating up his potential store inventory. He tasks the players with entering the cave and handling the gluttonous, elemental scavengers by whatever diplomatic or creative means they choose.
  10. What would be their reward for succeeding? - Clover provides a valuable cat-eye opal brooch upfront just for taking the job. Upon successful completion, he rewards the party with a mysterious, magically infused psionic crystal encased in raw quartz, the true ancient properties of which he doesn't fully understand.
  11. What would be the consequence of failure or refusing the call? - If the players accept the quest but fail to resolve the problem, or if they outright refuse the call, Clover politely smiles but quietly ticks a mark against them. He then informs his front-desk employee—a Deep Gnome named Fel who secretly runs a local criminal pickpocket ring—that the party is fair game outside the shop walls, leading to the party becoming targets for underground thieves without their knowledge.

Optional Questions - not required

  • What are the goals and motivations of your character? - Clover is motivated by his life's passion for natural geological beauty. He wants to run a successful shop, preserve unique mineral configurations, and bring a splash of color to an otherwise brutalist, stone-cut society.
  • How do these affect your general personality? - He is remarkably laidback and friendly compared to his stern, hyper-focused mining peers. He acts with high enthusiasm when talking up craftsmanship and loves showing off his underlit displays to new tourists.
  • How do you normally interact with your family/friends/peers? With your enemies/rivals? With people who work for you/report to you? With player characters? - He operates as an outsider to standard Dwarven subculture but gets along well with fellow societal outliers, employing a human woman for excavation and a deep gnome at his counter. He treats customers and adventurers with grand, charming salesmanship, enthusiastically offering them deals to get into their good graces if they seem capable of solving his underground pests.
  • Do you have a particular accent or language? Any idiosyncrasies in how you act and speak? - He speaks Common with the booming, jovial, and grandiloquent theatricality of a charismatic boardwalk carnival barker. Completely unbothered by traditional, stern dwarven stoicism, he expresses his high enthusiasm by broadly gesturing with his hands to show off his underlit crystal displays. His favorite physical idiosyncrasy is proudly twirling the vibrant green and purple ribbons woven into his long beard whenever he is smoothly upselling rare geological specimens to out-of-town tourists.
  • What impact have you made on the world? How have you shaped the local area? - Clover has introduced a rare, vibrant splash of color to the otherwise gray, brutalist, stone-cut town square of Theerum. Through Clover’s Crystals and his guided geological cave tours, he has effectively commodified the natural beauty of the subterranean wilderness, single-handedly turning a rugged mining district into a highly popular, educational tourist destination for travelers across the realm.
  • Do you have any current problems that prevent you from being a bigger player on the stage? - He is severely limited by his absolute lack of martial prowess. Because Clover eschewed traditional, heavy-armored dwarven warrior training to pursue high fashion and stone-cutting, he is completely defenseless against encroaching underground monsters, forcing him to walk a dangerous line by relying on a shifty deep-gnome pickpocket ring and mercenary proxies to safeguard his shop.
