Sidekicks & Sidequests

Building a world, one character at a time.

Sandrine

  1. This is a character that Adam Bradford rolled for randomly using our tables.
  2. What is this character’s name? - Sandrine (pronounced sahn-DREEN).
  3. What is their ancestry (i.e. human, elf, dwarf, halfling, etc)? - Clockwork / Cogwork Construct (Commoner).
  4. What is your job or role (i.e. farmer, hierling/mercenary, shopowner, bandit, etc)? - Solitary Fishmonger / Captain of The Sunset. Originally created by an elderly wizard as a recording dictation companion, Sandrine fell in love with fishing during a trip to the Material Plane with their creator. Following the wizard's passing, Sandrine modified their own chassis to become a solo commercial fisherman and fishmonger, operating out of a coastal harbor aboard a Spartan vessel named The Sunset.
  5. How old are you? - Midlife (A heavily aged, weathered construct with decades of saltwater wear).
  6. Describe your physical appearance. - Sandrine is a tall, bipedal construct standing around 6 feet tall with a stack-of-columns silhouette (reminiscent of IG-88). Originally crafted from shining mithral, their chassis is now a patchwork of beaten, unpolished brass, bronze, and rusted steel plates from years of saltwater repairs. Sandrine features long, extendable "Go-Go-Gadget" style arms used for casting nets, an eight-fingered left attachment hand, and internal ocular sensors that glow in low light. Their chassis is covered in sea salt, rust, and salt-crust.
  7. Describe yourself with 3 adjectives. - Creaky, Coarse (in body and chassis texture), and Cranky (Cantankerous and strictly efficiency-minded).
  8. What is a valuable item/piece of lore/secret that this character possesses? Or do they value an ideal/concept or particular person (i.e. family member, guild member, honor, justice, love etc.) - - Secret Item—The Ring of the Blink Dog: Sandrine wears a magical ring containing their deceased wizard creator's former pet—a rambunctious Blink Dog. Because Sandrine is cantankerous and finds the energetic creature annoying, they keep the dog safe inside the ring's extradimensional space, occasionally extending a secondary mechanical limb to give the dog scritches behind the ears. Secret Lore—The Unfished Bay: Sandrine possesses secret nautical knowledge of a hidden, un-fished bay containing an abundance of rare marine life, inaccessible by standard sailing vessels.
  9. What is a particular quest you would be willing to recruit or hire the player characters to go do? - Navigating the Unfished Bay. Realizing they cannot conquer the engineering and hazard challenges of the hidden bay alone, Sandrine hires the adventuring party to figure out a way to transport a vessel, nets, and supplies over precarious land/hazards to reach the waters, harvest a month's worth of fish in a week, and transport the catch back before it spoils.
  10. What would be their reward for succeeding? - A Massive Gold Cut & Relic of Divergence. Sandrine pays the party a massive sum of gold from their lucrative commercial haul. Additionally, Sandrine freely gifts the party an ancient magical relic/warding item found guarding the hidden bay that Sandrine has no personal use for.
  11. What would be the consequence of failure or refusing the call? - Lost Revenue & Escalating Monster Threat. If the party refuses or fails, Sandrine hires a rival adventuring party to execute the job, causing the player characters to lose out on the massive payday. Furthermore, leaving the hidden bay's magical hazards unaddressed allows the aquatic threats living there (such as Kuo-toa or sea monsters) to spill over into the local coastal shipping lanes.

Optional Questions - not required

  • What are the goals and motivations of your character? - Sandrine's primary motivation is maintaining maximum mechanical efficiency in their commercial fishing trade to honor the memory of their late creator.
  • How do these affect your general personality? - Sandrine behaves like a cold, pragmatic, and cantankerous "salty dog" (reminiscent of HK-47 or an Android). They view human emotional outbursts as illogical and evaluate conflicts strictly through copper-and-gold financial ledgers.
  • How do you normally interact with your family/friends/peers? With your enemies/rivals? With people who work for you/report to you? With player characters? - Sandrine speaks to humanoids ("Squishies") with dry, blunt practicality. When dealing with rival fishermen attempting to bully them (like Big Charlie), Sandrine delivers ice-cold, calculated threats with clinical precision ("You are very squishy, very easy to puncture, bleeds lots").
  • Do you have a particular accent or language? Any idiosyncrasies in how you act and speak? - Sandrine speaks Common in a monotone, creaky, and slightly mechanical cadence. Physical idiosyncrasies include long pauses while calculating financial totals at super-speed, clicking their extendable limbs, and quietly looking at a photograph of a small human child in their cabin before deactivating for mental decompression.
  • What impact have you made on the world? How have you shaped the local area? - Operating a solo vessel on the ocean, Sandrine has disrupted the local fishmonger economy through mechanical efficiency, out-fishing entire multi-man crews while practicing selective marine conservation to preserve future catches.
  • Do you have any current problems that prevent you from being a bigger player on the stage? - Sandrine is limited by physical chassis decay and solitary operations. Years of saltwater corrosion and the lack of a full crew prevent Sandrine from expanding their operations into more dangerous, un-navigated oceanic reaches without outside adventuring proxies.
