Penance

  1. Randomized. Seth Crenwelge rolled for the character randomly using our tables.
  2. What is this character’s name? - Penance.
  3. What is their ancestry (i.e. human, elf, dwarf, halfling, etc)? - Quaggoth.
  4. What is your job or role (i.e. farmer, hierling/mercenary, shopowner, bandit, etc)? - Clairvoyant / Seer & Runecaster. Penance lives as an eccentric, secluded child seer residing in an abandoned shack built over a portal or entrance to the Underdark. Utilizing runic stones, ritual bones, and precognitive visions, she predicts future events and destiny. She lives in a state of self-flagellation and constant guilt, inflicting punishment upon herself for sins she has foreseen herself committing in the future but has not yet actually carried out.
  5. How old are you? - Child (A small, young Quaggoth possessing unnerving precognitive maturity).
  6. Describe your physical appearance. - Penance is a small, gaunt Quaggoth child with fur covered in self-inflicted scars from her rituals of penance. She has bright, starlight-like eyes that peek out from the darkness. She wears oversized, shabby, and tattered dark robes stolen from Drow, and she carries a set of hand-carved runic stones and animal bones used for casting divinations.
  7. Describe yourself with 3 adjectives. - Discreet, Guilt-Ridden, and Yearning (Yearning for human connection while simultaneously terrified of it).
  8. What is a valuable item/piece of lore/secret that this character possesses? Or do they value an ideal/concept or particular person (i.e. family member, guild member, honor, justice, love etc.) - Secret Lore—The Wishing Hole (Hand-Sized Astral Portal): Hidden in a dark hole beneath her shack (or down in her Underdark lair), Penance knows the location of a hand-sized planar rift to the Astral Sea. She views it with fairytale logic as a "wishing well," reaching her small hand inside to pull out random objects or items stored in other people's Bags of Holding or extra-planar pockets across the multiverse.
  9. What is a particular quest you would be willing to recruit or hire the player characters to go do? - Executing the Odd Job / The Firefly Quest. Driven by her rigid belief in pre-ordained destiny, Penance recruits or hires passing adventurers through her door slit to execute a seemingly bizarre, mundane odd job in the local town (such as catching fireflies in a broken jar or moving ten specific farm animals). She insists that doing this specific task triggers a critical butterfly effect required to prevent a disastrous future prophecy she has foreseen.
  10. What would be their reward for succeeding? - Astral Portal Access & Future Prophecies. Upon completing the odd job, Penance shares her precognitive insight or guides the adventurers to her secret "Wishing Hole," allowing them to reach into the Astral Sea portal to retrieve a random magical item or lost artifact.
  11. What would be the consequence of failure or refusing the call? - Looming Dooms & Existential Dread. If a party ignores or refuses her request, Penance reads them horrific, pre-ordained visions of their doom (such as foretelling an ancient Lich or apocalypse arriving sooner because the "butterfly effect" was broken). Additionally, she acts as an ambient nuisance, using her prescience to magically misplace items or cause minor misfortunes in their future.

Optional Questions - not required

  • What are the goals and motivations of your character? - Penance's primary motivation is ensuring that pre-ordained destiny and the timeline unfold as she has foreseen in her runic visions. Her secondary goal is seeking forgiveness or atonement for future mistakes she believes she is fated to make.
  • How do these affect your general personality? - She behaves like an eccentric, aloof, and brooding seer. She frequently talks or chides herself aloud in the present tense about mistakes her future self has not yet made, creating an unnerving, anxious aura around those who speak with her.
  • How do you normally interact with your family/friends/peers? With your enemies/rivals? With people who work for you/report to you? With player characters? - Around strangers, she speaks through closed doors or small slits with childlike yet gruff aloofness. With friends, she slowly reveals her vulnerability and guilt. Around enemies, she recites terrifying, detailed prophecies of their impending deaths to inflict existential dread.
  • Do you have a particular accent or language? Any idiosyncrasies in how you act and speak? - She speaks Common and Undercommon in a raspy, gravelly cadence. Physical idiosyncrasies include constantly clattering her runic stones between her paws and staring unblinkingly at people's faces as if watching their future unfold behind their eyes.
  • What impact have you made on the world? How have you shaped the local area? - Local townspeople view Penance as the eccentric, spooky child seer at the edge of the woods whose seemingly nonsense requests occasionally save the village from unexpected catastrophes.
  • Do you have any current problems that prevent you from being a bigger player on the stage? - She is paralyzed by her own prescience and guilt. Because she believes her future actions are already written in stone, she spends much of her energy isolating herself and inflicting self-punishment rather than actively adventuring.
