Sidekicks & Sidequests

Building a world, one character at a time.

Tayla

  1. This is a character that Mellie Doucette is rolling for randomly. She creates her own sidequests.
  2. What is this character’s name? - Tayla.
  3. What is their ancestry (i.e. human, elf, dwarf, halfling, etc)? - Yikaria (Yak Folk). Standing nearly six feet tall with a wide, imposing silhouette, Tayla carries a massive sherpa-style bag filled with pigments and minerals that makes her appear to have a stoop.
  4. What is your job or role (i.e. farmer, hierling/mercenary, shopowner, bandit, etc)? - Caricature Artist. Tayla is an abstract artist who captures the "essence" of people through her sketches. Her work is more than simple art; it is a visual form of "true naming" that cements the memory of a person’s existence.
  5. How old are you? - Immortal. While she appears as an elderly woman (roughly 60 or 70 in human terms), Tayla has existed for centuries. Her age is most apparent in her ridiculously long, curved horns, the tips of which have recently become brittle and shattered due to psychic strain.
  6. Describe your physical appearance. - Tayla has long, hanging "blue steel" fur filled with gems, knickknacks, and flowers. She possesses an older, non-threatening appearance but carries a massive pack that contains far more than just art supplies. Her horns are painted with smudged, non-permanent pigments.
  7. Describe yourself with 3 adjectives. - Spiritual, Quiet, and Astute.
  8. What is a valuable item/piece of lore/secret that this character possesses? Or do they value an ideal/concept or particular person (i.e. family member, guild member, honor, justice, love etc.) - Lore—Tayla knows everything there is to know about Aboleths because her family line is indentured to one. She serves as an envoy for an ancient, Abyssal horror that "eats" memories. Every caricature she creates serves as a way to satiate the creature's hunger and keep it from rising to destroy the world.
  9. What is a particular quest you would be willing to recruit or hire the player characters to go do? - Tayla offers tiered quests depending on the party's level. Low-level adventurers are hired for "Fetch Quests" to retrieve rare pigments and minerals from dangerous locales. High-level characters are subtly guided toward the underwater cavern where her Aboleth master rests, in hopes that they might be powerful enough to destroy the creature and break her family's curse.
  10. What would be their reward for succeeding? - For simple tasks, Tayla provides magical caricatures that hold the "true name" essence of the subject. For slaying the Aboleth, Tayla leaves behind her "Deck of Many Things" (Yikaria version)—a box of hand-drawn cards representing primal nature and cosmic horror that allow the user to literally "pull the art" into reality for single-use magical effects.
  11. What would be the consequence of failure or refusing the call? - If the call is refused, the Aboleth’s hunger remains unsatiated, causing it to grow more impatient and demanding, eventually forcing Tayla into the role of an unwilling antagonist who must "harvest" souls for her master. If the players attempt to kill the Aboleth but fail, the creature realizes Tayla has betrayed their deal and may unleash its wrath upon the world, starting with her descendants.

Optional Questions - not required

  • What are the goals and motivations of your character? - She is motivated by the protection of her descendants and the preservation of history. She wants to stop serving the Aboleth but is limited in what she can say or do because the creature monitors her thoughts and controls her life "on a string."
  • How do these affect your general personality? - She is incredibly careful with her words and has learned to discipline her mind to avoid thinking about her plans for rebellion. She uses her astute nature to "read" people, looking for those strong enough to act as her proxies in the fight against the Aboleth.
  • How do you normally interact with your family/friends/peers? With your enemies/rivals? With people who work for you/report to you? With player characters? - She is quiet and insightful, often knowing things about the characters that they haven't told anyone else. She treats them as potential "souls" who can either help her with her pigments or, eventually, solve her much larger problem.
  • Do you have a particular accent or language? Any idiosyncrasies in how you act and speak? - She speaks in a low, raspy, and deeply measured whisper, executing absolute mental discipline to keep her true thoughts entirely opaque from her psychic master. Because of the massive weight of her sherpa pack, she moves with a slow, grinding stoop. Her primary physical idiosyncrasies include a gentle, rhythmic swaying back and forth while sketching, occasionally reaching up with a pigment-smudged hand to delicately trace the brittle, shattered tips of her painted horns whenever she feels an intense surge of underwater psychic strain.
  • What impact have you made on the world? How have you shaped the local area? - Tayla serves as the invisible buffer between civilization and an ancient nightmare. Through her abstract caricature artistry, she has successfully documented and anchored the spiritual 'true names' of centuries of local populations—unwittingly acting as an administrative harvester whose art preserves local history for mortals while simultaneously feeding those identical memories to an Abyssal horror to prevent it from rising to shatter the region.
  • Do you have any current problems that prevent you from being a bigger player on the stage? - She is completely hand-tied by total mental surveillance. Because her Aboleth master monitors her mind, actively tracks her thoughts, and holds her life 'on a string,' she cannot openly speak of her plight, express her rebellion, or directly take up arms against her captor without immediately triggering the execution of her entire family line.
